New Year’s resolutions for the home
It’s Blue Monday, stay positive by making some all-important resolutions for 2015. Here’s five New Year’s resolutions you could make for the home to kick off the year in style.
1. Get in shape
Put your home on a diet and get rid of everything you don’t use, you’ll be amazed by how much space and light it creates. There will inevitably be items you don’t use but want to hang on to, so get creative with your storage or see if they can be displayed somewhere – one of the benefits is that you’re likely to stumble across forgotten items that can add vintage charm. Lots of people resolve to give to charity in the New Year, so kill two birds with one stone and donate your unwanted items to a local charity shop.
2. Be more healthy
The New Year is always a time where people promise to be healthier, and that can apply to the home too. For a healthy home, check smoke alarms, carry out those small repairs that you haven’t yet got round to doing, and be more energy efficient where possible. Fill your home with flowers; plants have air-cleaning qualities and instantly brighten a room and your mood. Double the air-purifying benefits and give your home-cooking a health boost by growing your own herbs on the windowsill.
3. Start a project
Choose one area of the home you want to improve and see it through. If you’re short on time and resources then start small, paint cabinet doors or re-upholster that old chair. If you have more time and budget to play with then redecorate the room that most needs your attention. For the longer term, go from room to room and make a list of every improvement you’d make if money and resources were no object. This will give you focus and you may be pleasantly surprised at how many you manage to achieve over the next 12 months.
4. Buy something new
We know January is a time to be frugal, but treat yourself to one new item for the home, like a stand-out light fitting, a fabulous piece of wall art or a statement rug. It doesn’t need to cost the earth, pick up a bargain in the January sales and keep an eye on Ebay – it’ll be awash with people selling unwanted gifts and you’re bound to uncover some hidden gems. One fabulous find can give your whole room a new lease of life.
5. Take some ‘me’ time (and space)
Create a space in your home that’s just for you. It doesn’t have to be an entire room, just take a little nook where you can unwind. Fill it with things you love and a choice collection of cushions for comfort. You could even use the space as a dedicated area to take up a new hobby for the New Year, like crafting or yoga.
