What goes around comes around. Wallpaper is back and back in a big way, so here are five ways you can use wallpaper to make a style statement.

1. Add character with a feature wall

So the term feature wall has become a little overused but the result still gets our seal of approval. Adding a feature wall is a great way to create depth and add interest to a room. Select the wall which will hold focus, like the wall behind the sofa, the wall in line with your dining table or the head of your bed, and cover it with a statement wallpaper. Paint the remaining walls in the same colour as your feature wallpaper or a lighter colour to create a harmonious look. You can either pick out the colour of the background or the pattern itself.

2. Use wallpaper to set the theme

There’s so much choice when it comes to wallpaper that you can base your room’s entire theme around it. Want to create a feeling of nature without actually putting plants in the house? Then a nature themed wallpaper like the iLiv Botanica can bring the outside in. Bird prints are still on trend, and the iLiv Songbird wallpaper would look super stylish in a room accessorised with ornamental bird cages. If you’re really wanting to make a statement, Graham & Brown’s Marvel Cover Story wallpaper would be perfect for a retro comic book theme.

3. Go places you’ve never been before

Think wallpaper is just for walls? Think again. Use it in panelling, on table tops, over a canvas, and even to brighten up a headboard. Paper the inside of your wardrobe, it’s a space that’s just for you so you can really have fun with it. An underused – but very effective – design option is to put wallpaper on the ceiling to give your room a unique sense of style.

 4. Create depth, texture and space

Striped wallpaper is a great way to elongate a room and make a small space look bigger, while lighter-coloured wallpapers will open up a room and create the illusion of space. Patterns, too, can transform a room: Small-scale patterns create a feeling of spaciousness, and large, bright patterns make a room look intimate and cosy. If you prefer a plain wall, a textured wallpaper can add interest, while a paper that's both textured and patterned creates an air of luxury and decadence. Textured wallpaper is also a great way to hide existing imperfections in your walls or plaster.

 5. Fake it until you make it

If you’ve always longed for a naturally-occurring feature wall – think gorgeous open brickwork or a beachy weathered wood effect – you definitely aren’t alone. Luckily, there are lots of wallpapers on the market which let you fake it. The Lowry Brick Red wallpaper and Clarke & Clarke Peeling Planks look just like the real thing, but the options are endless. Why not try concrete, graffiti of chalkboard effect papers? You can even use wallpaper to fake a bookcase
