What interior design trends will be big in 2017?
With the popularity of themes, colours and styles shifting constantly it can be difficult to know where to start when changing up your home. We checked in with our expert designers to discover what will be big in 2017 so you can get it right.
Industrial bathroom aesthetic
Dramatically changing bathrooms by framing the shower will become an addition both contemporary apartment and traditional home owners will desire. Not only does it create a real feature but it also works to keep the splashes at bay. Use black steel or burnished metal materials to offer a romantic French door or more minimal black lines to show contrast between tile and floor. At present, we have only discovered the companies offering customised framed doors. However, Coastal Shower Doors ‘Gridscape’ series also fits the bill. Watch this space for other designers to follow suit with their own creations.
Cultural fabrics
We live in a fast-paced world immersed in technology and there is a need for tranquil balance. That’s why materials inspired from traditional cultures around the world will take the centre stage in 2017. Faded cotton, whimsical embroidery and geometric print layers will exude the handcrafted or artisan feel found in world-wide cities. Mulberry Home and Parisian show rooms have already shown their love for the theme and key pieces for one of iLiv’s new collections, Samira, follow suit. The designs have been hand drawn in the UK but combined with qualities sourced from a recent trip to India give them a real sense of authenticity. The colour palettes are based around traditional dyes and spices including; indigo, henna, ebony, chilli and olive.
Small space hacks
An increasing number of homeowner’s struggle with storage space. When it’s added, shelves and boxes can look bulky and out of place, almost competing with their surroundings. One style that builds in strength is same-colour painting. Shelves that are painted the same colour as the walls whether that is brilliant white, or midnight blue create the illusion of space. The bold paint effect can make storage appear built-in and cohesive.
That must-have colour of the year
Two colours battling it out to gain appraisal are a rich dark green and Dulux’s colour of the year, ‘Denim Drift’. Say goodbye to blush and pastels and make a splash with greens and blues.
Not only does dark velvety green appear decadent and regal, it also works well with natural elements, tan accents and industrial materials.
Denim Drift brings freshness and is adaptable to all generations. The drift part of the title comes from how the shade can drift from a bright blue to smokey grey depending on how you pair it with other colours and fabrics. Warming up with green or cooling down with blue will be on everyone’s wish list.
Head over heels for upholstered headboards
Gone are timber frame bed heads, we’ve been graced by fabric headboards and they are sticking around for the foreseeable. A neatly covered headboard in one shade or colour can dress a bed just like we are treated to in our favourite, luxurious hotels. It provides a focal point to the room but can add instant glamour too.
