If we were to ask you to name a stylish city, we’re almost certain Paris would be one of the first to spring to mind.

The French capital is synonymous with a chic, luxurious yet effortless aesthetic – from its galleries and bistros to its architecture and well-dressed residents. Here’s our tips on how to incorporate a little ‘je ne sais quoi’ into your maison.

Mix old with new

A cornerstone of Parisian decor is the mixing of vintage and modern to create eclectic spaces. It’s a city known for its art, so pay homage by combining historic inspired paintings and classic French film posters with modern, graphic prints from contemporary urban artists. Trawl second-hand shops to unearth quirky, unique pieces to add to your abode and keep a mixture of books on food, art, film and fashion on display. Team art nouveau-inspired fabric chairs with a glass dining table or emulate the baroque period with an antique crystal chandelier hanging above a marble coffee table.

Artistic allure

The French introduced the world to the art deco movement, when the style was first exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris in 1925. Traditionally characterised by luxurious, bold designs, geometric shapes and smooth lines, channel your inner Daisy Buchanan with the addition of art deco accessories. Choose wallcoverings and cushions featuring Chrysler building inspired patterns, and mirrors and lamps with fan shaped panels.

Effortless elegance

One of the distinguishing characteristics of Parisian style is a natural chicness, a sense of not having tried too hard. Not everything has to be perfect - a rustic chest of draws with a distressed paint finish shows a regard for aged, antique items, and it’s okay if the patterns on your cushions and curtains clash. But think shabby chic not tatty; opulence, with a cool, casual appeal.

Noir et blanc

Paris may be known as the City of Light, but black, off white, navy, grey and gold tend to be the predominant shades utilised within a typical home. That doesn’t mean you can’t inject lighter accent colours among the monochrome, from piping on cushions and tiebacks for curtains, to a basket of blankets by the fire and vases of pretty pink peonies.

Finishing touches

As with any interior overhaul, it’s all about key pieces and finishing touches. Try a large gilded mirror above the fireplace or propped up against a bedroom wall, an ornate carriage clock on your mantelpiece, sweeping voiles or heavy drapes, and a velvet buttoned sofa to relax on as you peruse recipes for apple tarte Tatins. Traditional herringbone floors can be topped with a bold patterned rug and wainscot panels add character to a plain room. Make the most of period features too if you’re lucky to have them in your home.
