Sweet dreams

First thing’s first, it’s all very well having a bed that’s top of the style stakes but it’s important to be comfortable too. Invest in the best mattress you can afford and a mattress topper for even more cushiness. Indulge in a sumptuous duvet and plush pillows – goose down pillows always look plump and inviting. For an extra burst of luxury keep linen spray on the night stand and spritz before you tuck in.

Lessons in linen

Don’t get too fixated on the numbers as the highest thread count doesn’t always mean the best quality linen. However, always opt for cotton sheets – 100 per cent pure is often preferred but there’s no need to shy away from good quality poly-cotton linens which are easier to care for and iron. Egyptian, pima and Sea Island cottons are considered the crème de la crème, but so long as your linens are soft to touch you’ll still feel cloaked in luxury. Layer your bedding with a throw or coverlet to add comfort and style, and stay ahead of the trend by opting for throws in embossed or quilted fabric.

Pillow talk

Pillows and cushions are the centrepiece of every bed, so make sure they exude style. Use a variety of different sizes but be careful not to go overboard or your bed will look too top heavy. Mismatched cushions will give it that extra panache; try stripes, a bold graphic, a small pattern and a solid hue, which will work well together in coordinating colours. Seamlessly tie the room together by matching one of your cushions to your curtain fabric.

Dress it up

To skirt or not to skirt? If your bed is stylish or free standing there’s no need, but if you want to hide the frame then a skirt, be it tailored or gathered, is a no brainer. For a little something extra, why not top everything off with a headboard? From upholstered to wooden, colourful to neutral – the options are endless and a headboard is guaranteed to add a touch of glamour.
