Decorating is personal because your home is an extension of your personality. We’ve chosen some of our favourite style personalities – decide which is more ‘you’ and follow our tips to create the look.

Classic

You like things to be simple yet elegant, and you aren’t easily influenced by the latest fads and trends. You prefer your furnishing to match, and your style wouldn’t look out of place in a magazine or a show-home. This look should balance both bold and neutral colours, and plains, plaids and understated patterns or stripes are common. Choose curtains over blinds or shutters, but don’t be afraid to incorporate a statement piece, like a lamp, vase or framed print.

Modern

Your decorating mantra is ‘less is more.’ You like clean lines and open spaces, and you think fussy patterns are excessive. Your style is modern and minimalist, so decorate in a single colour or colour scheme and don’t let it vary. Balance is key, so arrange cushions, artwork or lamps asymmetrically and tie everything together with a quirky piece of artwork or a statement sofa.

Rustic

Pantone’s Spring 2015 colour report was right up your street, and your style favours natural beauty and hand-crafted items. You’re rustic, so the obvious choice is to bring the outdoors in with real flowers, bracken and logs. The overall look is cosy, with exposed woods and dark details where possible. Leather seats are popular in rustic rooms, and fabric should focus on natural prints, like florals, botanicals and animal prints. Woollen throws and touchable textiles will increase the coveted cosy factor.

Shabby Chic

Your look is soft, feminine and laid back – and you’ll fight anyone who says it’s ‘cluttered.’ A shabby chic style oozes effortless elegance and should incorporate distressed fabrics, lace and ditzy florals. It’s a slightly more feminine take on traditional vintage style but the usual rules still apply: flea markets are your friend. Salvage old furniture and whitewash floorboards, and base your room around a neutral scheme with pastel touches for the ultimate shabby chic design.

Art Deco

Do you like glamour, elegance and bold colourful patterns? Then you’re suited to Art Deco. Art Deco is intentionally overly decorative, so don’t be afraid to go all out with this style, particularly when it comes to light fittings – the more the better. Furniture should be made from industrial metals and lacquered wood, and fabric patterns should be intricate and make a statement. You don’t need too many contrasting colours in an Art Deco-inspired scheme, and darker colours such as a deep red or navy blue were popular in the era. Pale blue or dove grey provide a softer look while staying on-trend.
