Decorate a rented home without losing the deposit
According to a recent survey, 40 per cent of people in Britain now rent their homes rather than buying outright, and it’s left lots searching for ways to spruce up a rented space.
Follow our top tips below to discover how you can put your stamp on a rental property, without leaving the kind of mark that will cost you your deposit.
1.Transform walls
You may not be permitted to paint or wallpaper but it doesn’t mean your walls have to be bland. Vinyl wall decals and stickers are a great temporary wall covering option and peel straight off with no fuss. Hang art and photographs without putting holes in the wall using 3M Command strips or adhesive hooks. If you want to steer clear of attaching things to the walls altogether, try wallpapering the backs of bookshelves or the panelling on cupboards and wardrobes for an instant lift.
2. Dress windows
Curtains are something you can select yourself and change with ease. Invest in long drapes that reach the floor, and hang them high. Unless a window is exceptionally wide, they should be able to go with you anywhere, and long curtains will make the room look bigger. Mark your window as a focal point and dress up with flower pots and window boxes.
3. Customise furniture and fittings
So you can’t paint your walls, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t paint your furniture. Add pops of colour with a brightly coloured chest of drawers or coffee table. If you don’t own the furniture, try adding custom handles to cupboard doors. Statement light fittings will also go a long way towards transforming a room.
4. Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise
It’s a given, but a few well-chosen accessories will make all the difference. A beautiful rug will rejuvenate boring flooring, and brightly coloured cushions and throws will bring a plain room to life. Try to stick to two or three bright colours for a together, yet individual look. Cover anything you can with fabric – fabric covered storage boxes are bang on-trend and a great way to conceal the household items you don’t want on display.
5. Fill it with things you love
One of the biggest challenges when it comes to decorating a rented property is making it feel yours. You might not own the bricks and mortar but this is your home, so make sure your personality is embedded into the décor. Fill rooms with items you love, then draw everything together with one statement piece like an oversized, freestanding mirror. This will make your room look bigger, too.
